On the morning of May 4, 2019, Professor Sebastian Wandelt of the School of Electronics and Information Engineering of Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics was invited to visit and gave a lecture on the theme of “Big Data: Lessons from Bioinformatics” in Room 418 of the main building.Professor Wandelt was selected into the “Excellent 100 Talents” program of Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics in 2016. In 2017, he was selected into the thirteenth batch of “Thousand Talents Youth Project”.His research interests include big data compression and indexing algorithms, large-scale system optimization algorithms, and interdisciplinary research in the field of computer and transportation. He has published more than 70 papers such as IEEE T INTELL TRANSP, IEEE ACM T COMPUT BI, and TRANSPORT RES E-LOG. He won the Best Paper Award of the International Conference 4 times and presided over the special project of foreign young scholars of the National Natural Science Foundation of China.
Professor Wandelt proposes that from sales to human resources, medicine and healthcare, to artificial intelligence, big data is constantly changing the way we think, and all walks of life are affected.However, having big data does not automatically lead to better decisions. The key is to be able to process data efficiently, that is, data management.Historically, bioinformatics has a 10-year lead over many other fields, and the first human genome was assembled and disseminated in 2001.This report outlines the growing volume, speed, diversity, variability and complexity of information, with a focus on bioinformatics.The report emphasizes that methods developed in this area, especially data compression methods, should be used as a model and transferred to other research areas to cope with the increasing data management challenges.
